After 9 years of the Danone Nations Cup…
The very idea of the Danone Nations Cup was conceived the day after the 1998 Football World Cup and the celebrations that unite so many people around a common love: football. Franck Riboud, Groupe Danone CEO, had the idea of recreating this special atmosphere of happiness, enjoyment, acceptance and friendship, every year, for children all over the world. And that’s how the world’s reference event for 10-12 year old football players came into being: the Danone Nations Cup.
The event is founded around 4 fundamental values:
Openness: Meeting children from all over the world and taking part in a prestigious sporting event
Accessibility: More and more clubs, schools and children on the pitch each year, and more and more spectators in the stands
Fair-play: Respecting the ethical charter and the rules of the game which are signed by the coaches and players and which are approved by FIFA.
The pleasure of the game: Enthusiasm about football; a shared passion in a global event
« Believe in your dreams »
As well as being a famous sports competition, the Danone Nations Cup is also a unique chance for children from all over the world to meet. They discover new cultures, learning openness, but also togetherness. The Danone Nations Cup helps children then to « live their dream » of being a footballer, giving them the chance to play in France’s biggest stadiums (the Parc des Princes in Paris from 2000 to 2004 and this year again and the Stade de Gerland in Lyon in 2005 and 2006) and to meet football’s biggest stars.
Famous sport personalities have been involved in the Danone Nations Cup: Lilian Thuram was the event’s ambassador in 2000, and Bixente Lizarazu in 2001 and 2002. Since 2003, Zinedine Zidane has been the international ambassador for the event. The most famous French footballer is also ambassador to ELA (European Leukodystrophies Association) and the Danone Nations Cup has supported ELA the past 5 years by donating the entire revenue that the World Final generates to them.
